Zagreb
In 2014 we invited the Zagreb Museum of Broken Relationships to Basel in order to set up their emotional overview of some of the world’s most heartbreaking love stories. We spent an intense time together, preparing an exhibition of broken hearts. It included our own contributions that told of our own traumas. Every day during the installation process, we walked up the hill to the Markthalle to eat. We sat in Room F where, just a few weeks later, our SMC Basel premiere would take place. We ate fried rice and spring rolls, and Olinka decided that the social muscles of Zagreb also needed exercising. It took two years for it to become a reality. MOBR invited SMC to be part of the Change of Heart festival in Zagreb’s shiny Upper Town – the district itself is shaped like a heart. It had a wonderful surprise in store for us: Just a few days before the event, the mayor’s secretary invited us to host SMC in the most splendid of the halls in the Mayoral Palace. Peace to the shacks! War on the palaces! But, actually, it was stunning! So, at the top of the city in a pretentious palace under a gargantuan chandelier, we cast a spell on Zagreb. We built so many new relationships (some of which, of course, might now be broken again).
